Welcome to the PIDX Data Dictionary (PIDD)

What is the PIDD?

  • The PIDD is an interactive and collaborative dictionary that PIDX member companies can use as a primary reference for terms and definitions related to PIDX e-commerce standards.
  • During the 1990s, the predecessor PIDD Dictionary group collected definitions from industry organizations, regulatory agencies and the United States Government, including definitions related to PIDX EDI Transaction Sets.
  • This new PIDD Dictionary builds on that base of definitions with a specific focus to support the needs and enhance the data usage of PIDX member organizations in their work to develop e-commerce standards.

What is the purpose of the PIDD?

  • The primary purpose of the PIDD Dictionary is now to enhance the quality and usefulness of the PIDX e-commerce standards.
  • By allowing access to PIDD Dictionary content to other industry organizations and government agencies without restriction, the Dictionary can serve to expand and improve the use of PIDX e-commerce standards beyond the PIDX membership.

Who Manages the PIDD?

  • The Dictionary work group of the PIDX Standards and Guideines Subcommittee has ultimate responsibility for the content and layout of the Dictionary. In practice, proposed additions to the dictionary will mainly come from the work groups and SIGs (i.e., Business Process Work Group, Downstream SIG, etc.) as an inherent part of their development activities.
  • PIDX owns the content and is entitled to administer it to meet the needs of PIDX member organizations. The American Petroleum Institute (API), as host organization for PIDX, holds the copyright of the content. Access and use of the definitions is available to all without restriction.
  • The wiki platform that the PIDD Dictionary support system runs on is maintained by PIDX staff.

What's Read-Only and What's Updatable?

  • Anyone can propose a change to the PIDD (see above). This includes both PIDX members and non-members.
  • However, only authorized individuals can update dictionary entries, following policies and guidelines established by the Dictionary work group.
    • In practice, this usually consists of modifying term definitions based on someone's submission.
    • These authorized individuals include: Dictionary work group members, PIDX staff, PIDX chairs, and other appointed individuals.

Have Questions?

  • If you have any questions about the PIDD Dictionary, feel free to contact PIDX staff members: Paul Macias (pmacias@lmi.org) or Desiree Burnley (burnleyd@api.org) or the Dictionary Work Group Chair, Alan Doniger (alan.doniger@energistics.org).
